Text Box: which was in a very sorry state and a small boy still attached to it who insisted he did his best to hold onto it until it blew inside out and at that moment stopped dragging him along the pavement!
Text Box: Since we’ve been here the weather has gone from unusually chilly to the hottest day in Campinas for 120 years. Then it rained so much that a visit to “Arks R Us” looked very likely. Then March 29th Text Box: brought the biggest tropical storm in 40 years to hit Campinas, leaving a trail of destruction and a few very wet missionaries who had been at the bus stop at the time it hit. Text Box: Once again it’s time to write to you all and let you know how things are going here in Brazil. Do you ever have one of those Gideon moments when you ask yourself if you’ll ever be any good at anything and wouldn’t it have been better if God had chosen someone else? Over the past couple of months we have felt like this many times, particularly where our language study is concerned. One day goes well and you feel you’re making progress, Text Box: then the next day you are plunged into the depths of despair as you discover a new verb tense which at first glance appears totally incomprehensible. Then when you feel you understand, you attempt a conversation with someone at the bus stop and realize they seem to be speaking a language you’ve never heard before! - or is it the other way round?
We’ve been going to a boys home regularly to get some experience and to improve our language Text Box: acquisition. It is only in a situation such as this that we realize we still have some way to go until we are fluent.
That aside, the boys home has been a valuable experience. It is amazing to see how a group of over energetic youngsters calm down when they get one to one attention playing Ludo under the shade of a tree. It’s a reminder that for children in an institutional situation it’s difficult to get the attention you need.
